What is art if you don’t show it to the world? The Performing Arts Department is designed just to do that! During Winter Quarter many of the art classes at SPSCC focused on preparing for concerts, plays, and other performances. Four different events from the Performing Arts Department are being organized this March after hard work and dedication in a variety of styles. All of them are held at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts, located in building 21. The events all have free admission for all staff, faculty, and students. Guests are welcome in, but a $15 donation per person is very much appreciated.
The first performance is March 14, when the SPSCC Jazz Band will present a show that will “Rock You into Spring.” It starts at 7:30p.m on the same day. Talents from across the community will be the “main characters” in the show. For those who can’t wait to find out what the Jazz Band has in store for them, here it is! They will be able to dance and shake it to the sounds of bebop, blues, Latin and swing jazz.
Next up is the SPSCC Percival Choir and Chamber Singers who will perform on March 17, again from 7.30p.m. At the end of each quarter, they feature a diverse range of cultures and seasonally appropriate music. During this quarter singers are centered around folk song, and a combination of different types of traditional folk music from around the world.
The SPSCC Symphony Orchestra is also doing a concert the following day. It will happen on March 18th, at 7:30p.m. All of the orchestra will be playing “Vows and Chorales”, conducted by SPSCC music professor Cameron May, who has worked with many different orchestras over the years, and just recently became the Music Director for the SPSCC Symphony Orchestra.
“A Dystopian Future Isn’t ’Far Away’ with the South Puget Sound Community College Theatre Collective”. A dystopian world engulfed in war is artfully presented by SPSCC’s Theatre Collective in this theatrical play. It will be presented by students from the college’s theater class, as well as other members of the community, such as workers from Harlequin Productions who assist the technical team. Come see it on February 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m., along with two afternoon dates: February 26 and March 5 at 2 p.m.!
