Kyunghyub Noh, Senator for Diversity and Equity (Fall 2023-Spring 2024)

Kyunghyub Noh, who goes by Noh, pronounced like the word “no,” is the Senator of Diversity and Equity Affairs. He is an international student from Busan, Korea. He has been in the U.S for about a year. Noh is working towards his Associate degree to keep his options open and explore his different interests.

Choosing to work in the Student Senate Noh was ultimately seeking a way to help people. He chose SPSCC to advance in his English learning after coming to the United States, during his three-month adjustment period he has received a lot of help from others at SPSCC that he is extremely grateful for. This ultimately led to his decision to apply for the Senate position. He wanted to give back the love and help he received from SPSCC.

“I want everyone to have a somewhat stable life,” Noh says. “[This] does not mean that everyone uses the same items and does the same work but rather that everyone lives without any shortcomings as human beings.” With all of this, he knew this was the position in the Senate he would be best fit for to

Noh comes to campus with the goal of studying and helping others, though he  typically does his studying at home and helps others on campus whenever he can.  If he’s not at the Food Pantry, organizing inventory and preparing necessary products or helping at the Clipper Cafe in Building 22,  Noh collaborates with the DEIC to plan and create projects while also participating in Uncomfortable Conversations to create a “bright culture” here at SPSCC.

Noh wants to leave behind the love he has received at SPSCC and have other students share that love wherever life takes them.

“I hope that I can help heal other people’s hearts and eliminate their discomfort,” Noh explains.

Noh is currently working on creating a “Buddy Program” that will connect English speaking students and students with different native languages together so they can share cultures, exchange languages, and build true friendships. This correlates with his hopes for the future of SPSCC to have even more opportunities available to students that prioritize growth, broader perspectives, and encourage learning of different cultures and languages.

Noh is one of the sweetest, genuine and caring people I have ever met. I am extremely thankful that I was able to interact and learn more about him, he is always willing to help anyone and answer any questions. He has an amazing personality that will brighten anyone’s day.

Since he is graduating next year, Noh will not be continuing in this position but he encourages others to apply! Noh suggests that if your goal is to simply just make money, you should not apply. These jobs require putting a lot of time, research and effort into helping students. The Office of Student Life hopes that students who are interested in diversity and equity will apply for the positions open for next year!

Noh believes that a suitable person for the position is someone that has passion for diversity and equity and will let their passions take over their work.
