We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate our mothers and everything they’ve done for us. Mother’s Day is celebrated in various places throughout the world but especially in America where it has become the day with the most phone calls ever made. Due to its importance, we are here to tell you a little bit about Mother’s Day, its history, and how you can celebrate it locally and in your own home.

Mother’s Day was first established in the early 1900’s by a woman named Anna Jarvis. When Jarvis’s mother passed away in 1905, she decided that she wanted to make a day honoring mother’s sacrifice to their children. She organized events at churches and campaigned to make it a national holiday arguing that holidays in America were too male biased and that they ought to be more dedicated to women. She advertised a letter writing campaign in order to get than holiday officially approved. Her efforts were successful in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a national celebration.

Ever since it was established, Mother’s Day has become near and dear to people around the world as people gather to celebrate their mother figures and women around the world. This year, there are a number of local community events and activity ideas happening right here in the Olympia area so you can celebrate. From magic shows to candle making there are tons of local events in Olympia so that you and your family can celebrate Mothers. Here at South Puget Sound Community College, there was a craft event hosted so that you could make crafts for your mother. Pick-up kits will be available at the student life front desk as well.

Be sure to show your mom or other important women in your life that you appreciate them this Sunday by treating her to a nice brunch, picnic, gift, or giving her a call. We wish you all a happy Mother’s Day!
