This is the second installment of my campus resource series. The services featured may not be surprising, but there are some details you might not have known about them, some of which I’ll be sharing with you here.

Advising, Career, & Transfer Center

The Advising, Career, & Transfer (ACT) Center can help you with just that: advising, careers, and transferring. Educational and career planners are available for every currently enrolled student to meet with to discuss pathways, degree plans, class registration, and advising on steps to securing a job and how to transfer to a four-year university after SPSCC, amongst other things.

Advising ServicesWalk-in advising is meant for quick questions, such as checking on your degree plan and your graduation readiness. Most advising services are only provided through appointment, such as, but not limited to:
Comparing different degrees
Creating a degree plan
Beginning transfer planning
Receiving an unofficial review of transcripts.
Career & Job SupportCareer and Job Support advisors can help you with:
Learning more about your interests, skills, and goals
Discovering the career options best suited to you and your interests
Deciding on a major based on your career choice
Reviewing resumes and cover letters
Learning about job interviewing techniques
Researching career fields and job outlooks
Looking into opportunities for working on campus
Helping students find local job opportunities during or after their time at SPSCC
University Transfer PlanningUniversity transfer planning is pretty straight-forward. Transfer planning can help you with:
Making sure your degree will be complete on time and fulfill the requirements of whatever university you’re going to
Finding the information necessary to transfer to your chosen university
Applying to a four-year university
How to Make An AppointmentThe easiest way to make an appointment for any of these services is to use Compass, which you can find under “mySPSCC” on the SPSCC website. You can select which of your assigned advisors you would like to meet with, what you’d like to meet about, and which of the available times you’d like to meet for.

Security

If you’ve done any classes on campus, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen a security vehicle making their rounds and patrolling campus. You also might know about the Emergency and Weather Alerts, which are currently powered by Rave, or have gotten emails about all the catalytic converters that keep getting stolen from people’s cars in the parking lots. However, there’s also a pretty good chance that you don’t know what other things the security team can help with. The security team encourages students and faculty to report things such as suspected crimes, harassment, sexual harassment, and discrimination, academic integrity, and even strange or uncharacteristic behavior of students.

ServicesEmergency Support: Call the security number to report any ongoing or immediate aftermath of crimes, suspected crimes, or otherwise suspicious circumstances or people.

Non-Emergency Forms:
For security or safety concerns that are not urgent, there are a variety of forms that can be used to report an incident or suspected incident. For non-emergency reports, the reporter’s information may be requested. Although this is not required, it is recommended. Security will only use this to get in contact with the reporter for a follow-up if necessary, and will not disclose the reporter to any person(s) who may have been reported, although there is not a 100% guarantee of confidentiality for other parties.

Incident Report
BIT ReportIf a student is acting noticeably different or unusually, the Behavioral Intervention Team exists to keep track of and come up with intervention plans to assist students before a crisis can occur. This doesn’t have to be suspicions of the student in question becoming violent, but could also be unusual behavior potentially attributed to abuse, change in housing or work situation, or other events or circumstances that could hinder a student in their efforts to succeed at SPSCC. More information can be found on the BIT report form, here.
Academic Integrity ReportAcademic integrity is a big deal at any college, but SPSCC puts a particular emphasis on it. If you are an instructor, you can submit a report over a student’s violation of academic integrity. It is recommended you consult  your Dean before making the report. The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities can be found here and the Academic Integrity Report form can be found here.
Bias Incident Reporting and Harassment, Sexual Harassment, or Discrimination ReportingThere isn’t a large difference between the Bias Incident Report and Harassment, Sexual Harassment, or Discrimination Report. Both aim to protect diversity on the campus and prevent hateful actions from spreading, as well as appropriately dealing with harmful events that have already happened. When filing a report on these matters, I encourage you to look at the forms and what information they inquire about to decide which one you should use. The Bias Incident Report is here and the Harassment, Sexual Harassment, or Discrimination Report is here
Non-Emergency Incident ReportThis is perhaps the most simple report on this list. If you witness the aftermath of a crime or suspected crime (such as finding out that your car’s catalytic converter has been stolen…), you can report it here for security to address once convenient. Any other incidents you think might be relevant to the security team but are not in immediate need of attention can be reported through this form as well. You can find the Non-Emergency Incident Report here
