For many SPSCC students, studying at home sounds more convenient. But for some students, home can quickly become a place filled with distractions, interruptions, and a lack of focus. As students balance classes, work, and personal responsibilities, many are turning to campus spaces to stay productive.

To better understand how students approach studying, several SPSCC students were interviewed about where they study most effectively and what challenges they face at home. A common theme among the students interviewed was the difficulty of staying focused once they returned home. Family responsibilities, noise, phones, and the comfort of being at home were all mentioned as common distractions.

Jayden, an SPSCC student, explained that distractions at home, including interruptions from family members and everyday responsibilities, often make it difficult to stay focused for long periods of time. He also mentioned that inconsistent Wi-Fi and the lack of what he described as “academic energy” at home make campus a more productive environment. Because of his commute, Jayden often chooses to remain on campus after classes to complete assignments without interruptions.

Augusta, another SPSCC student, explained that staying on campus often helps her remain focused and complete assignments more efficiently. Although she occasionally gets distracted by people walking by or noisy environments, she said campus still feels more productive than studying at home. She also mentioned that finding the “right” study spot can make a major difference in concentration.

While both Jayden and Augusta described campus as a space that helps them stay productive, not every student interviewed shared the same preference. Unlike Jayden and Augusta, Cooper, a Running Start student, explained that he prefers studying at home because it feels more comfortable and relaxed. As a Running Start student balancing both college and high school classes, he said staying on campus for long periods of time is not always practical. Cooper also noted that different study environments work for different students, and that personal routines and responsibilities often play a major role in where students focus best.

Although each student interviewed had different study preferences, all three described how environment can shape focus and productivity in different ways. For some SPSCC students, studying is not just about completing assignments, but about finding a space where they can stay focused, manage responsibilities, and separate school from the distractions of everyday life.
